If you’re planning to drop a friend or family member off at London Stansted Airport anytime soon, you might want to brace your wallet.
In a move that is frustrating motorists across the country, Stansted Airport has officially hiked the cost of dropping passengers off right outside its terminals. The days of a quick, cheap goodbye are quickly becoming a thing of the past, making it more important than ever to plan ahead and compare your parking options.
The New Charges: What You Need to Know
If you're pulling into the terminal drop-off zone, the clock is ticking. Here is the breakdown of the steep new fees:
Under 15 minutes: £10 (a £3 increase from the previous rate)
15 minutes or more: £28
Re-entering within 30 minutes: £28 (No circling around if your passenger is running late!)
Over 30 minutes: A massive £100 Parking Charge Notice (PCN), though this drops to £60 if paid within 14 days.
(Note for Blue Badge holders: Unlike some other UK airports, Stansted does not exempt Blue Badge holders from the standard £10 drop-off fee. However, if your passenger needs a little extra time to safely exit the vehicle and unload luggage, you can easily avoid the £28 overstay penalty. Simply locate a traffic marshal in the Express Set Down area and show them a valid Blue Badge—they will gladly grant you a time extension so you don't have to rush.)
Why the Sudden Hike?
According to a spokesperson for Stansted, the price surge is designed to manage terminal congestion and crack down on "kiss and fly" traffic. The airport is also under strict planning conditions to push passengers toward public transport—aiming for 50% of travelers to arrive by bus or train, a target set to rise to 54% as passenger numbers grow.
Stansted isn't alone in this trend. Just last December, London Heathrow bumped its drop-off charges from £6 to £7, adding a strict 10-minute maximum stay before a £40 penalty kicks in. Following another £1 increase at the start of 2025, Heathrow’s drop-off rates have soared by 40% in just four years.
The MammothParking Solution: Compare, Book, and Save!
Let’s face it: paying £10 for less than 15 minutes—and risking a £100 fine if you get stuck in a traffic bottleneck—is a stressful way to start any trip. While Stansted does offer a free park-and-ride facility further away from the terminal (and a discount for locals living within 10 miles), navigating shuttle buses with heavy luggage isn't for everyone.
